Heavy pack ice in NW Passage ice creates tough conditions this year

Image
 -  Nunavut's  territorial  newspaper  in the  Nunavut  and Nunavik regions of the eastern Canadian Arctic. This map from the National Snow and Ice Data Centre shows heavy ice conditions on Sept. 6 in the Northwest Passage. Icebreakers and cruise ships travelling through the Northwest Passage encountered rough sailing conditions this past week: heavy ice closed the Queen Maud Gulf between the northern coast of the mainland and the southeastern corner of Victoria Island in Nunavut. While the rate of ice loss during August in the Arctic Ocean overall in 2014 was near average, the Northwest Passage continued to be clogged with ice and was unlikely to open, the National Snow and Ice Data Centre said in its most recent Arctic ice report. That’s because weather patterns are pushing more chunks of polar pack ice into the Northwest Passage than in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011. In those years, atmospheric conditions led to “minimal ice inflo...

Water Vapor Feedback and the Global Warming Pause

Image
Global warming is the predicted result of increasing atmospheric CO2 causing a very small (~1-2%) decrease in the rate at which the Earth cools to outer space though infrared radiation. And the since temperature change of anything is always the result of net gains and losses of energy, a decrease in energy lost leads to warming. The direct effect of that warming is only about 1 deg. C in the next 100 years, though (theoretically calculated, in response to an eventual doubling of CO2 late in this century). Climate models instead project 2 to 3 times as much warming as that, due to “positive feedbacks” in the climate system. But the Earth hasn’t warmed as much as expected by the global warming pundits and their positive feedbacks, especially in the tropics where deep moist convection dominates the atmosphere’s response to forcing. Why? We know that water vapor is the main atmospheric gas which reduces the Earth’s ability to radiatively cool in the infrared (IR). And, unlike CO2...

Piers Corbyn: HIDE THE RISE! The Warmists Arctic Sea Ice trick 2013 - What the BBC did not report?

Image
“ONE clear thing we can say about 2012-2013 Arctic Sea Ice Extent is that it shows the most extreme variation of all in the last 11 years. This and other extreme events and changes are predicted aspects of the developing Mini Ice Age now upon us - associated with our WeatherAction Solar-Lunar predicted wild jet-stream shifts and specific events; none of which can be comprehended or predicted by the delusional CO2 ‘theory’. Global Warming Jumps the Shark: the Week in Climate Stupid?

Image
This was the week when global warming jumped the shark. Just like it did last week. And the one before... 1. Soon children will have forgotten what outdoors looks like, claims HuffPo Doctors at a Washington, D.C. paediatric clinic are increasingly prescribing sunshine and outdoors - "nature time" - for their young clients, reports Lynne Peeples for HuffPo . But the story isn't as heartwarming as you might think from the first paragraphs. That's because stalking this charming scene like a ravening, blood-crazed, razor-fanged death creature with a sinister cowl kind of like a wicked evil monk's probably concealing a grinning death's head face and an evil as old as time, is climate change. Yes, Peeples has managed to find at least two eco campaigners so shameless and utterly desperate that they have been prepared to put their names to quotes suggesting that "climate change" is threatening to make outdoors a no-go zone. "Nature is c...

Warmist from People’s Climate March warns: ‘If we don’t start to address global warming, I predict we will see another Sandy in our lifetime’

Image
NEW YORK — Labor unions and environmental groups said Wednesday they expect a huge turnout for a New York City march to draw attention to climate change taking place two days before a United Nations summit on the issue. Organizers of the New York event, called the People's Climate March, said similar actions will take place Sept. 21 in other cities, including Rio de Janeiro and Lagos, Nigeria. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has invited heads of state to a Sept. 23 climate change summit in New York. President Barack Obama is expected to attend. City Councilman Donovan Richards said at a rally to publicize the march that he expects many people from around the country "will descend on New York City streets to let our leaders know that we can no longer turn a blind eye to this crisis." Richards was joined by dozens of trade unionists and members of environmental groups, like the League of Conservation Voters, on the steps of City Hall. He also said he ho...

How to Talk About Gobal Warming So People Will Listen: A Skeptic’s View

Image
A recent essay in The Atlantic purports to instruct readers on “How to Talk About Climate So People Will Listen.” The author, Charles C. Mann, is a longtime contributor to the magazine who writes about history, tourism, and energy issues. With this article, he tries to cut a path between the two warring tribes in the global warming debate, the Alarmists and the Skeptics. He fails, rather spectacularly I think. The first four paragraphs (out of 45) are good, as are a few paragraphs later on about enviro fruitcake Bill McKibben. But the rest of the article simply accepts the dubious and sometimes outrageous assertions and false narratives that gave rise to alarmism in the first place, the same ones skeptics delight in debunking. Surveys show most people know more about global warming than does Mann, and why skeptics once again won most of the debates in bars and around grills this summer. A Good Start Mann starts out strong, reporting how the media turned an obscure mo...

We Are Told By Government-Funded Fear Mongering Global Warming Jihadists ,That Their Forecasts Of Dangerous Man-Made Global Warming Rely On “Settled Science”.

Image
Their “settled science” represents a mare’s nest of computer models, resting on a few match-sticks of science, surrounded by tall forests of uncertainty. It is indeed settled science that all gases in the atmosphere can affect the exchange of heat between the sun, the Earth and outer space, and this can affect global temperatures. It is also agreed that certain gases like water vapor and carbon dioxide can absorb and redirect radiant energy passing through the atmosphere. It is also settled science (but seldom mentioned) that the warming potential of each additional unit of carbon dioxide is progressively less, and is trivial at and above current levels. It is also agreed that water vapour has a far greater “greenhouse effect”, because it is fifty times more abundant, and it affects more radiation wavelengths. However, it is not settled science that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is the main controller of global temperatures. Nor is it proven or agreed that man’s p...
