Downtown Sacramento hit a high of 107 degrees Sunday, just one degree away from matching an 1894 record.

The late summer heat wave is being caused by an area of strong high pressure that is creating sinking air over California, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Chris Hintz. “And when air sinks, it heats up.”

On Monday, Sacramento is expected to hit 108 degrees. Redding's high temperature is forecast to be 111.
